Balloon Wall

Decorating with balloons is a very affordable way to add a lot of color to your theme. For the 50th Anniversary of Stonewall in Pride Parade, I wanted to make a statement backdrop for photos, and ended up doing so for around than $10. Whether you are doing rainbow colors or all one color, Party City sells balloons in any configuration you need. All you need to construct this wall is approx. 100 balloons, a spool of curling ribbon, heavy duty tape – and I suggest a hand-held balloon pump.

Decide how much of the wall you want this backdrop to take up, and keep in mind each balloon is approx. 10 inches in width. For example, the wall pictured above is 15 ft, so I determined 16 balloons per color would occupy a little over 13 ft of the wall, leaving a nice border. If you are doing alternating colors, divide your balloons into piles per color, and blow up exactly how many you will need to occupy your space.

Cut the curling ribbon an extra 24 inches than the width of the space you are occupying, and tie a knot around the bases of the balloons one by one until you have made the whole row. Repeat this process with each color until your balloons are all ready to hang. Start with the bottom row, and secure it to your wall with a generous amount of heavy duty tape. Repeat the process until your wall is complete!

TIP: Balloons tend to pop in hot weather. The first half of the day, the balloons looked great and stayed in perfect shape. Around 4pm when temperature reached the high 90’s, the balloons started to pop! I recommend this design for spring or fall when the weather is 75 degrees and below.
